Dr. Barbara McKnight

Co-Founder, Director of Field Studies.

Barbara has studied Tsavo elephant behavioral-ecology at both the population and individual level for more than 30-years in the Tsavo Conservation Area (1989).  She has conducted elephant behavioral field studies in Tsavo East & West National Parks and in adjacent conservancy and ranches. She spent 10-years as the primary investigator for many volunteer elephant field research projects. She currently focuses on known bulls and family behavior related to environmental conditions and human activity in Tsavo East National Park. Her primary focus is on bull social dynamics: associations between bulls and bonds, activity and bull behavior in a bull area.  She trains and supervises Kenyan field teams, collecting data on known Tsavo elephants. Dr McKnight has studied whale and dolphin behavior in southern California, Baja and New Zealand. She earned her MSc and PhD in Zoology from Oxford University, UK.
